Created for my Production Processes class, this short film follows a man grieving the loss of his wife on the day of her funeral in a bar, drowning his sorrows. When confronted by his brother in law, the two must come to terms with their grief and their individual ways of coping.
This project was something that I and my wonderful DP and Producer/AD spent our entire semester pouring our hearts and souls into to ensure we were putting our best creative feet forward.
The project parameters limited us to four minutes at a maximum and while at first it seemed like a difficult thing to accomplish, what we accomplished I couldn’t have asked for anything better.
One of my biggest goals for this film, and this was actually something that my DP suggested, but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. My original pitch for this film was a sci-fi story, but seeing as my previous two projects were sci-fi, my DP suggested I try something different this time. Instead, I allowed myself to dive into a dramatic piece and something that really inspired this film was an Academy Award nominated short film from Denmark released in 2021 titled, On My Mind.
We didn’t have many setbacks, however, our location sound was not as clean as we would have liked it to be and unfortunately we didn’t have a lot of post production time, but I think that it was a good thing because now for future projects, I can reflect on this moment and prepare better. But despite this setback, I am still proud of the film we made. We even made it into our class reel and I couldn’t be prouder of that.
While I know most of my crew had to be there for course credit, my gratitude for their work and the wonderful work of my extremely talented cast has no limits. I am beyond grateful for all of their work and their dedication to helping us achieve our creative vision from start to finish.
